Before the settlement, this region served as a passage for indigenous people and drovers, being known as Cruzinha. In 1870, the Empire created the Dona Isabel Colony with the purpose of populating and producing in these lands using European labor. Thus, the first immigrants arrived in 1875. From 1884, it became a district of São João de Montenegro and in 1890, it was emancipated and received its current name. The municipality has developed to the point of gaining national visibility.
