Cemetery

The first cemetery in Bento Gonçalves began to take shape in Colonia Dona Isabel, at the end of the 19th century, and can be seen in the oldest photographs of the municipality. The space represented one of the limits of the headquarters, this being the northern limit of the center.

During the Intendencia of João Baptista Pianca (1924-1928), there was greater concern with the sanitary condition of the city. Some cases of typhus started to be associated with the fact that the cemetery was close to homes, on a hill, so that when it rained, there was infiltration in the water sources, which could cause contamination.

Thus, the construction of the current Central Cemetery began, in the São Francisco district, a region that at the time was a peripheral zone, far from the population nucleus. It was structured following new standards and was given the burials of the ancient necropolis .
